Wilkinson goes Back to Back with the Backhand AttackPosted on 17th Nov 2017
Wow what a surprising start to the 2016 season. Wilko does it again backhanding his way to the champion of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach winning the first two events of the World Surf Lague 2016. Matt Wilkinson is in the zone and riding the momentum to the fullest. He has a large lead to start the new season and should be wearing the yellow jersey for some time now. Who would ever of thought Matt Wilkinson would be number one and Connor Coffin the rookie from Santa Barbara as number two surfer in the world going into the third event at Margaret River Pro April 08 – 19. The times are turning in surfing as the best surfers over the last 20 years are reaching the ends of the there careers and it’s time to get used to some new names.
The waves were big and heavy as the best surfers had to go to the power surfing game. There were no airs and fancy tricks as Bells Beach was all about the power rail game and major hacks. Wilko showed his consistency and impressive backhand power. Jordy Smith, Mick fanning and Italo Ferreira all had very strong showings with great surfing. Jordy looked very strong and comfortable in the big right handers. Fanning is Fanning and always surfs well and is going to be there in the end.
The big question is as we go away from the right point breaks and into beach breaks and heavy tubes, is can Wilko do more than just backhand? What we do know is he’s on fire and in the zone.
Can’t wait until the upcoming Drug Aware Margaret RiverPro see you in the water
